I used to believe in reincarnation...but that was in a past life! :-)

If I read correctly, souls came to this planet in the second 500,000 year segment of a 1,000,000 year timeline (if that's wrong, please disregard, unless it's relevant to my following questions). So:
Each timeline is separate. There were souls for both timelines.
- How many souls were there originally? Was this number arbitrarily chosen?
Around 7 billion
- Has the number of souls changed?
No
If not, how do we account for population fluctuation? Did the population ever drop below the original soul count?
No. You were told to go forth and multiply. This was because, in order to employ chaos as a variable, you needed more variables on the planet. At this point in time, nearly everyone who has ever lived on this planet is walking on it 'now'.
Also, if the population goes over the original number, what of all the other humans? Are they soulless beings equivalent to roaming zombies?
There's no possibility of this.
If the number of souls does change, how are new souls created?
Won't happen.
What would differentiate a newborn baby having a new soul, due to increasing population, as opposed to a past soul reincarnating into this baby?
There are no new borns. All have lived prior lifetimes
Lastly, at the risk of again changing the subject, do non-human animals have souls?
All mammals have souls. Dogs, cats and so on. These are not among the 7 billion quote provided.
If so, do all or some, and do they reincarnate?
Yes
If they do reincarnate, is it only within their species, as is the case with humans (or so I'm led to believe)?
Yes

Is everyone living "rapid-fire" incarnations as you have so put it about your own path, or are some of us dormant from mortal life in between lives?
No - it's been one of my functions to arrive a key moments to keep the timeline from blowing itself up. Your purpose is to learn how to be a good person.
Secondly, does judgement cover all of your lives, or just the most recent one and are there comparisons to where you have improved or fallen from past lives?
The last is the cumulation of all that came before it.

. Steven, I've submitted this slogan to the Threadless.com (they make winning slogans into tshirts). If it wins, you've got yourself $500 (I take none for myself).

If it all matters -- I definitely feel that this is my last time around. Seems like I circled the globe with different lives / lifetimes.
And, frankly, I hope all my cats and dogs I have had the pleasure of providing a home for do come back around -- in this lifetime. Just think if the average lifespan of your dog or cat is 15 years -- you may be able to experience their company once again in your own lifetime.
And, Cal, your answers were very succinct. Better than wading through entire pages of Buddhist and Hindu stuff which is why there so much confusion regarding reincarnation.

Dinah
Thanks
With regards to animals, Old One once made the comment to me that Rollie and I had traveled together before. While my black lab, Lilly, is a good dog and a fair companion (not much of a conversationalist though), Rollie was something special

The night of the day she was put down because she had such a large tumor that was estimated 90% inoperable, my dog, Precious, came to see me in dreamstate one last time before moving on, despite me being 80 miles away. It was good to see her, since I was unable to be with her in her last moments in that life due to me being away for college, and that she was no longer suffering. I was hoping she would be able to go on, just a bit longer...

Thanks Op
Can't claim to have invented the line...can't remember where I heard it either.
"Do Good - Be Good" would make an excellent t-shirt slogan.
Here's another one..."I can't remember a time when I have ever forgotten anything"

Op,
Got another one for you...
"I feel more like I do now than I did before. In fact I feel better all over than I do anywhere else!"

Here's one from Richard Nixon
I know you think you understood what I said, but what you heard is not what I meant.

The page on HQ called Dog Tales is about Rollie. I had to put him down last year. I still miss him.

One of my coworkers, during his break, found this video on yahoo's homepage under featured news: cosmos.bcst.yahoo.com/up/player/popup/?rn=3906861&cl=10658663&ch=4226723&src=newsAdditionally, there are numerous reports and studies on the subject of responsive xenoglossy which would give evidence (not proof) to the concept of reincarnation (at least, for some people). Personally, I don't give much weight to reincarnation, not so much because I debate whether it is true or not, but because, the real truth is, all we can deal with is "now." It's the most important thing we can deal with. Living in the past, it's not a way to live one's life. You work with whatcha got and you move forward incumbent upon experience and your god-given tools.

Joe - couldn't have said it better - you live in the reality you've got.
