I looked into the idea of solar cells for my residence. It would take 12 years before I saw payback! Not a reasonable investment.

Loads of wind in my area also. 5 year payback on a smallish wind turbine and the locals would scream bloody murder over zoning (not that I care - I've already done battle with them once and they're disinclined for a round two) . Still too high on the payback. I've been considering
getting parts separately and having them assembled by someone not involved in the energy scams. For that these things are - their retail is way too high. When you hear the commies promoting these things, they don't mention the outrageous prices involved with technologies that aren't that exotic.

There are some inventors doing some nifty work with steam.

I remember one guy made one, 2, 3, 4, 6 and 8 cylinder engines. The 2 cylinder was strong enough to use as a power generator. The amazing thing to me was to see the little pressure cooker hooked up to these engines, and he made them so efficient that they ran on as little as 2 psi.

He sells the plans so you can build your own, and for the small engines, they seemed very reasonably priced. I don't remember what they retailed for.

How to convert the energy into 110/120 A.C. is beyond me, but somebody must know.

The amish in Ohio make an airtight 750 lb. wood stove out of heavy guage steel with welded seems that will heat 2500 sq.ft. It holds enough wood for 12-16 hours of burning, with a large door (splitting wood optional), will bake 8 loaves of bread at once, has a warming rack, a 25 or 40 gallon water reservoir on the back (off the floor) with hot water faucet, and also has coils that will heat water and send to a remote storage tank. Cold water intake line, and hot water outlet to storage. Porcelin enamal oven liner. This thing is super deluxe. In Nov 2005 it was $2500.

Perhaps some industrious folks in Colorado have created something similar, it would cost your right arm to have one of these shipped from Cincinnati with the price of diesel these days.

The easiest solar generator is one invented by Arco Oil back in the 70's. They built a huge facility in the desert with computer controlled mirrors reflecting light onto a central steam boiler which was then used to generate juice. Smaller versions could be practical as well

Brilliant idea! Just one snag. I suspect that governments will do that same thing they did when people started switching to the cheaper to run diesel motors. They will just and raise taxes accordingly to make sure they get their money. Diesel used to be the cheapest fuel at pump stations in England. Its now the most expensive fuel.

We can drill our way out of $4 oil. Supply is the key to lower prices for anything - this is an economic axiom.
Also, not solar, not wind, not alcohol, and not gerbil power will replace the heavy lifting that is provided by oil. There is no conspiracy to keep oil in place and suppress other methods. All other methods combined only provide 2% of the energy supplied by oil currently. Sure, go ahead and develop other alternatives, but don't stop the oil.
Also, there is no such thing as BIG OIL in the US. If you combine all the oil controlled by US based (stockholder controlled public companies) oil companies like Exxon Mobile and Chevron, etc, they still only control 6% of the world's oil. Russia also only controls 6%. About 75% is controlled by nation states like Iran, Iraq, Saudi and Venezuela. Big oil conspiracies are a myth, unless you are talking about countries like Saudi, and organizations like OPEC. They really do control oil prices by opening or closing the taps. If we drill for our own oil, they are then placed in a position of competition. I wonder how much money is being pushed at the environmentalists by Saudi to keep the US from extracting her own oil. Now that is an obvious conspiracy.

Dave. A few facts about ethanol. (and other bio-fuels)
It does not have the BTUs of oil.
It takes many resources to create. Fuel, land, water, fertilizer, pesticide, labour. These resources are better used creating food for the world, instead of creating food shortages by making ethanol.
It cannot be piped. It has to be trucked.
It is hard on equipment, because it mixes with water; corrosive.
It creates C02, as does all combustion.

There is no energy free lunch. Oil is an amazing product that without which the modern world would cease to exist. Take plastic alone as the source of many of modern miracles. As nations like India and China come on line as modern industrialized nations, the need for oil creates more demand. And if you are concerned about the environment, then let the countries with the most wealth, technology and environmental regulations do the drilling. The alternative is to let the others do it, and we know what a mess they can create.

I think the men in the oil business are waiting to see what the people will wrought in terms of politics. If his holiness Barry (Barrack) Obama is elected it will be tough to do business.

John McCain - should make the case to the electorate about how many barrels are available and how many jobs will be created and the safe record of drilling in terms of environment.

For the little guy - anyone can make a still and there is all kinds of plant life that can be cooked up to make alcohol. A person can pour one gallon of alcohol to two or three gallons of gas. Most stills use wood or coal.

I don't know for a fact, however I have heard that a design for a laptop computer that burns alcohol (for 24 hour use) is going to production. Then replace the supply and fire up the computer again.

I think that there is a market for alcohol if Barry is elected....I mean if Barry is elected prohibition could be on the table again. National Security of course. In addition the amount of money that the drug companies are compiling - they can supply psychotropic drugs for the unscrupulous. I hear that graduate doctors do not pledge the Hippocratic oath any longer.

I don't know how many Americans are on prescription drugs. I assume many.

Can you believe the morons in your government actually talking about going after the energy traders as the cause of the problem of high energy costs? Don't they know it's all Bush's fault. That and Katrina, and sub-prime loan insanity, and of course the failing war in Iraq - NOT.
Cal is right - something's gotta give. It is nothing but lies lies and more lies at every level of government, media, law, and academia. And I can hardly even find a single person to talk about reality with anymore. No-one wants to wade through all the garbage to find solid ground anymore. Then it was pointed out that eating vegetables also causes the death of hundreds and thousands of creatures in the process of growing food - mice, birds and small field creatures, insects, etc. Once again there is no free lunch.
Vegans and the like draw the moral equivalency between all creatures - a rat is a dog, is a chicken, is a boy. It was at this point that the host of the program said "and they are likely against abortion for the first three". Ha. Peta vs Petu. The hypocrisy of the left is so familiar it is almost comforting. You just always know where they are going to sit on any moral issue - on the wrong side.
