For those too young to remember:
In 1979, a student revolt resulted in the current Islamic set up in Iran. The ruler the, The Shah of Iran, was a dictator who had rights for everyone (women included) and promoted education for the people. However, given the Islamic mentality common to the middle east, he was also a hard handed enforcer of this dictums.
Yet, compared to what came about, he was a choir boy.
In Iran, if a woman is raped. The man receives lashes and a truck with a crane arrives to hang her. Something that never would have happened under the Shah.
There is a 40% unemployment in Iran with 30% of the population under 30. Iran is a one product economy - oil. While the people starve, the government has money to fund Hamas, Hezbollah and nukes.
Years ago, I met one of the Shah's family who was hiding here in the US. They had to hide because the Ayotollah's had hit squads searching for them. The girl in question, was well spoken, well educated and in all ways possible - reasonable.
The current upheaval in has been simmering for a long time. The flash point was when the election was stolen (big surprise). The rally point is now in the streets of Tehran. However, this is unfocused. It will gain focus and a leadership will surface.
The loser in the election served under the first Ayotollah and killed at least 7000 people from the Shah's former regime. The guy is no prize. However, it appears this has moved past him.
Given the limp noodle in the White House, I'm certain that we won't move to exploit things to our advantage. However, what ever plans Israel had will have been put on hold to see how this turns out.
There is, however, a large expatriot Iranian population in the US and you can bet they'll be providing money for guns etc.
As with all despotic governments - people will be dying and with each death (which they think they'll deter the population), they'll find people becoming more committed to over throwing the government. This is even more so in a culture where people are willing to be martyrs
