If you've been watching the news today you've probably heard that the shocking story of the day is that John Edwards has had an affair... *gasp*. The whole media is talking about the shock and the outrage surrounding the controversy, yet I keep asking, Who Cares??? Honestly the matter is between he, his family, and no one else. Its not the first time the media has grossly invaded the privacy of a public figure and it surely wont be the last, but I will say that it is wrong what the media is doing and frankly none of their business. Anyone who cares about this needs to get a life.
Obviously I know that John Edwards is probably not among the most popular politicans on this forum, but I would say the same for Republicans, Democrats, and any other public figure out there. What people do in their private lives should NOT be fodder for media attention.

Well its like Cal said, politics is a blood sport. I don't know it for a fact, but I suspect he was set up. But hey if the baby proves to be his, then all of his self righteous rhetoric is going to be judged by women.
Besides the liberal press needs the money. But I will not cry for the man. He can always sell pics of the baby.

This Mr. Two Americas. Seems he kept two of other things as well. Pretty low to be doing this while his cancer ridden wife is dying. The story is about hypocrisy - what's new.

That is true, it is hypocritical and the only ones truely hurt by this is his wife and kids.

Betrayal being a by product of hypocrisy is the topic for forgiveness or not. Since Edwards is two faced in public, what is one to think about his private? Edwards say's that he takes full responsibility. Kind of a patent admission, now he can define responsibility for himself and family might help him. The truth usually hurts when one chooses the path of hypocrisy.
While its in the nature of reasonable people to avoid pain. Its also in the nature to learn from pain. Emotional feelings can be soothed by an intellect.
No one enjoys betrayal and our first reaction is to anger to let the person know that we disagree with the choice.
The act of betrayal is so fundamental to the human experience in that people change threw time.
Those that stand for nothing will fall for anything. Now Edwards emotions can play catch up with his intellect. Cold fish that he is - only time will tell.

it can't be defended. and it isn't ours to forgive for. i can try to understand, but certainly don't agree with his choices. this one was a case where weakness and self delusion won out. Democratic America loves his wife a lot more than they ever liked John Edwards. Apparently, the man couldn't stand up to the myth or the legend. Which happens often.
The question is whether it will hurt his political career. Politicians and their mistresses have been a social reality for possibly as long as there has existed politicians or mistresses. But a lot of people seem to be outraged on the left. Probably because they believed the hype. Myself, I allowed for the possibility of the hype to be true. Real and true loving marriage with his wife of the non-trophy variety, their yearly wedding anniversary tradition at a Wendy's hamburger chain restaurant. Him sticking with her through her illnesses, him giving up politics for good to be with her. Her supporting him even while sick in this last bid to become president. To the left, a real 'blue collar boy made good' love story fairy tale. Forgetting how often in our own lives, the world ain't nearly that sweet or good, it it could exist somewhere outside of ourselves, for SOMEBODY, it made for a warm fuzzy feeling. But alas, inevitable reality. I think it's over for him politically. People are taking this seriously and seem to want to make it stick to him. The betrayal, of his wife, him asking his party to trust his good word, and the danger to the entire party had he been chosen as a nominee. At this moment, few are in a forgiving mood, but time will tell, as if has for others in this predicament over the centuries.

Edwards lost me when the life he espoused for the nation wasn't the life he, himself, lived. Hypocrite is at the core of communism/socialism. It always has been and always will be. All animals are equal but pigs are more equal.
Also, I don't buy for a minute this was his first affair. Just the one he was caught at. The guy has the depth of a teaspoon.

Cal, every time I see one of your references to Animal Farm I always hear the sheep in my head saying "four legs good, two legs bad," except lately it has been Hillary Clinton's voice saying it.
