I'd opine that's because the vast majority of those who are "we the people" (to be a real 'man of the people') suffer from addiction!!!


We're addicted to our paycheck$ to pay the bill$.

The great unwashed masses can ill afford time off from work to bathe (hence the "unwashed" ), let alone campaign for office, nor would be ready to go job-hunting again -- since our former job would likely be filled in our absence -- after an unsuccessful bid. Even with two-paycheck families.

What truly concerns me is to see career politicians who acquired great wealth while in office, and don't have highly successful spouses who earned it. Or whose spouse got rich courtesy of pork (Pelosi's husband comes to mind).

Both Kerry and McCain, for instance, married money. Rockefeller and Kennedy inherited their megabucks. Don't know about others on that list.

Well the official congressional compensation is x amount of dollars AND all you can steal.

McCain, earned 400k last year. Not in the millionaire class. There was a prenupt with the wife so he has no claim on her money. After 30 years of marriage one might allow he didn't marry her for her money.
