I don't know how many of you have been paying attention to the Olympic Games in Beijing, but I wanted to comment on the opening ceremony (I'm still watching it).
It is utterly dumbfounding. Amazing in every respect. Ingenious and enthralling to the highest degree.
This event is really lifting my spirits. The more we (Americans, self-proclaimed Rulers of the Earth) acknowledge their achievements and contributions, the better off the State of the Earth will be.
I want to know the Chinese.

Yes Chinese achievements are great. A place ruled by an ant farm mentality where personal liberty and freewill are non existant. Where opposition to the state can get you imprisoned, tortured and/or executed.
Yes China is a wonderful place.

"but I wanted to comment on the opening ceremony"
Dave comment: I did not watch it. I heard a talk show host talk about it.
15,000 people doing the same thing. Now imagine these 15,000 with guns.
Note to Cal:(and anyone else)...I have changed my handle away from aften to davidfirstaidprice, due to reorganization.

I watched the opening ceremony too ... I thought it was simply awesome. The previous ones in Grece, Australia etc were really great, but the Chinese really out did them all.
All the symbolism was pretty cool and the special effects, lighting, and music was really reflective of their history and culture.
I'm glad the events are bieng held there and China is being put on the spot for a little while for the eyes of the whole world to see. Maybe that can be the tiny flake that can start a snowball effect into motivating them to review their government and societal structures.
Who knows...

I found the opening ceremonies to be simultaneously impressive and intimidating. It reminded me of watching my unit roll into small towns in Iraq.

Hitler put on a good show to at the Munich Olympics.
Folks, take person note, what China is - is what the universe is.
This is why some of us are willing to fight.

Didn't see the ceremony, but I suspect that it was good. Theres no doubt the Chinese are a hardworking people with a great deal of pride, now imagine how much better they could be in a capitalistic society.

I learned two great facts about the Chinese tonight watching gymnastics:
1) They take away three year old girls to their gymnastics programs and let them see their families just once per year.
2) They may have lied about the age of their gymnasts (at least 2). A gymnast must be 16 in the year of competition, and 2 of those girls look 12.

My comment is towards the chinese people, not its government. The last 10 posts in here have not addressed their culture or people, which is what the opening ceremony is about.

The culture is one now based upon absoute surrender to tyrannical communism.
If you are going to make a distinction among the People of that culture, and divide them as you have into the people in the government, and the "people" as you say, then what are the characteristics of the "people" that we can see evident in the ceremony?
The people are naturally talented, and they use that talent in obedient subservience to the tyrannical communist government.
If they seem happy about their successful performance, it is mostly because it means they will probably keep their home and eat the next day, and secondarily, it feels good to express one's talent.
Cheaters and the cheated.
Also, it is common that the cheated are allowing for such because they aspire to rise to the ranks of privelege among the cheaters.
The exceptions are the rebels with conscience who stand in front of the tanks, and normally don't allow themselves to be choreographed in a glitzy show of glamour to make their tormentors look good. Unless they are on an inside mission.
Communism under the dictates of a falable human being and his cronies = Bad for everyone but the elite, and they walk on glass as well.
It is more fulfilling to express one's talents out of love and affection for one's leaders than for fear of their reprisal if one underperforms on a bad day.
Get it?

I refuse to look upon the olympic games and ceremony with contempt. But yes, I "get it".
If I think better of the Chinese people after seeing their performance, am I a fool?

Folks are Folks. Everyone deserves compassion and a chance to get to know the truth. It is positive to see the victims of a communist regime for their good qualities, their humanity, to see how in many ways they are just like you and me.
However, keeping in mind the differences is the only way to do anyone like that any good, if that is what you have in mind.
If now you are thinking better of the Chinese "people" I would say that is a step above whatever caused you to have a poorer assessment of them to begin with. My hope is that you won't be blinded to the reality of their situation. At their evolutionary moment, most are victims of a communist regime for a reason, and as Dave pointed out, will likely follow orders to your detriment when called upon. Heads up.
